Welcome to Kerala Wetlands
Kerala, "The Garden state of India" as depicted by Jawaharlal
Nehru, with its verdant forest clad mountains along the east,
extensive palm groves interspersed with a variety of crops
in the mid plains and, large stretches of backwaters or
estuarine lagoons along the west, besides being picturesque
and unrivalled in beauty, is an abode of a variety of life forms.
In contrast with the size of the state, it is endowed with one
of the richest and varied avifauna, almost one-fifth of the
total forms recorded in India.
Physiographically the state is
divisible into three well-defined zones: the hills (Western
Ghats) along the east, the plains and the sea board.
The state,a narrow stretch of land, 35 to 120 km in width, is blessed
with as many as 44 rivers, owing to the mountainous terrain
and heavy rains.
